A ceiling fan regulator is always connected in series with the fan. In series with fan, it causes some voltage drop in applied voltage and hence reduces the speed of the fan.

Types of Fan Regulator:

In the market three types of fan regulators are available.

  1. Electric Fan regulator
  2. Movable electronic  fan regulator
  3.  Step-type electronic fan regulator

1. Electric Fan Regulator:

Technology Used:

The electric fan regulator uses resistance to control the voltage across the fan motor. When we rotate the knob to lower the speed of the fan, respectively a resistance is inserted in the series of the fan. Energy Saving:

Energy saving is very poor in the case of electric fan regulators due to the use of resistance. Because the power that is saved while reducing the fan speed is wasted in the form of heat in the resistance. That is why traditional electric fan regulators are not available in the market.

Advantage:

The only benefit is that it is cheaper.

Disadvantage:

  • Very poor energy saving.
  • Relatively bulky and big in size.

2. Movable Electronic  Fan Regulator

Electronic fan regulators are modern fan regulators which consist of electronic circuits to control the voltage across the fan. In the movable electronic fan regulator, there is a very smooth knob through which you can change the speed of the fan very smoothly. Unlike the electric fan regulator in the movable electronic fan regulator, you can set it at many different speeds. Not only 5 or 6-speed levels. Technology Used:

There is an electronic device called TRIAC used in the movable type fan regulator to control the voltage across the fan motor. The basic thing is that the voltage across the fan is changed by changing the firing angle of TRIAC. And accordingly, it changes the voltage across the fan motor. But In the meanwhile, it also distorts the supply voltage waveform(Sine waveform) which creates a humming sound in the fan.

Advantage:

  • Continuous speed control.
  • More power-efficient and save energy at a lower speed of the fan.
  • Smaller in size compared to an electric fan regulator.

Disadvantage:

  • Expensive as compared to the resistive fan regulator.
  • Produces humming sound which disturbs.

3. Step-Type Electronic Fan Regulator

This is the best fan regulator currently available in the market. As its name suggests it is an electronic fan regulator but it is a step type. Same as a traditional or resistive fan regulator. But it is smaller in size and does not use resistance to reduce the voltage across the fan. So it does not causes heat loss like a resistive fan regulator. So it is efficient and also saves energy when you run your fan at a slower speed.

Technology Used:

The main objective of a fan regulator is to control the voltage across the fan motor. Here is also the same concept, but here instead of resistance and TRIAC we use the capacitor of different capacities for different speed levels of the fan. In this type of regulator, more than one capacitor is provided and their combination is inserted in the circuit according to the required speed. That is why in this regulator there is limited speed steps are given.

Advantage:

  • Energy-efficient so saves energy at a lower speed.
  • No humming sound during operations.
  • Smaller in size compared to an electric fan regulator.

Disadvantage:

  • Expensive as compared to the resistive fan regulator.
  • Limited speed steps while unlimited speed steps in movable electronic fan regulator.

Does a fan regulator save electricity?

From the above discussion now the answer is Yes. But all the above fan regulator does not save energy. Especially in the case of an electric fan regulator, energy-saving is very poor. But energy-saving at a slower speed is much better in the case of both electronic fan regulators.

Yes. You are right. The best fan regulator is the step-type electronic fan regulator. Because other types of the regulator have some major disadvantage.

In the electric fan regulator, the main disadvantage is very poor energy saving. So at a lower speed of fan saved energy is wasted in the form of heat.

In the Electronic movable fan regulator, energy-saving is good but there is a humming sound that disturbs and may harm your fan in long run. 

But in the step type fan regulator both of the above disadvantages are removed. Here energy saving is good and there is no humming sound at all.
