Best Ceiling Fan-Buying Guide

Best Ceiling Fan in India.  Friends, when we talk about electricity saving, we always talk about replacing traditional bulbs with LED bulbs. But if we want to save electricity, saving only through light is not enough. The contribution of fan consumption is more than the lights. So we also need to save electricity by replacing a traditional fan with an efficient fan.

When we buy a ceiling fan, we have to consider many other aspects of a fan besides energy efficiency. Like its price, look and feel, technology(Specially BLDC fans), etc. Here we will discuss them one by one. After discussing all the parameters I will suggest the best ceiling fan in India to me. Keep in mind this is not a sponsored post.

1) Size :

The ceiling fan comes in various sizes. Here the size of the ceiling fan refers to the size of the fan blade. It is also called blade sweep or blade span. Ceiling fans come in different sizes such as 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1400 mm, etc. Here the mentioned size 900 mm, 1200 mm, and 1400 mm are not the size of the fan blade. Actually, it is the diameter of the circle that you see when the fan blades are in motion.

Best Ceiling Fan Buying Guide-Fan size measurement

Fan size measurement

According to our requirements, we choose the size of the fan. Actually, according to the size of the room or office, we decide the fan size.

Here is a table to suggest the ideal size of the fan according to the room size.

Fan size (Blade span) Room Size
600mm(approx. 24 inches ) Less than 50 sq feet
900mm(approx. 36 inches) 50 to 75 square feet
1050mm (approx. 42inches) 50 to 75 square feet
1200mm (approx. 48 inches ) 75 to 160sq feet
1400mm (approx. 56 inches ) 160 to 250square feet

If the room size is bigger or in rectangular shape choose to install multiple ceiling fans.

2)Look and Design:

The ceiling fan comes with various designs and creativity. When you visit a store you may find a great design that more or less makes the fan costlier. So it is entirely up to you whether you want to buy a designer fan or not. But some of it comes with some additional features which are also useful. Like

  • Anti-dust fan
  • Ceiling fan with led bulb
  • Fan color with mat finish or metallic finish paint etc.

3)Air Delivery:

Air delivery is the main purpose of a fan. It is measured in CMM(Cubic Meters per minute). It shows the quantum of air displacement per minute by a fan. 230 CMM is a good value for air delivery capacity. The higher the CMM value shows the more air delivery capacity by the fan.

4)Speed of Fan:

There are two types of a fan named High speed and Normal speed. Obviously, the high-speed fan has the higher rpm. But it might be that their blades have no proper deep to deliver more air. So I suggest that rather than fan speed check the Air Delivery or CMM value of the fan.

5)Power Consumption(Wattage):

Wattage is the parameter that shows the electricity consumption of that fan. Higher wattage suggests that the fan will consume more power which will increase your electricity bill. So we always choose a fan that consumes less power or has less wattage. But when choosing a fan with low wattage we should think about our requirements. Like room size, CMM, etc.

So, there are some parameters to choosing the best ceiling fan. Accordingly, you can choose a good quality power-efficient fan. One of them is the BEE star rating.

6)BEE(Bureau of Energy Efficiency) Star Rating:

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is an agency of the Government of India. They provide a star rating as per the appliance’s efficiency and performance. Higher-efficiency devices get higher star ratings or you can also say that higher-rated devices or fans are more efficient. For the ceiling fans, it is decided on the basis of its performance with respect to input power. Which is the ratio of Air delivery CMM to power input?

There is an important note about the star rating that it changes every year as technology changes. So a five-star rated fan in 2014 may not be as efficient as five stars rated fan in 2020. It may also be that a 3-star rated fan in 2020 is more efficient than a 5-star rated fan in 2014.

7) Technology(Motor):

Each ceiling fan has a motor which is usually a single-phase induction motor. Which is designed to operate on a 220/240 volt 50 Hz single-phase supply. Most of the brands provide the copper winding of the motor which is better. Typically an induction motor-based fan consumes 60 to 80 watts.

Some of the new technologies in the fan industry are BLDC (brushless direct current motors) fans. Which are actually based on DC motors and are highly efficient compared to induction motor-based fans. Typically a BLDC fan consumes 30 to 45 watts which save about 40 to 50% of the power. And therefore reduces the electricity bill.

Conclusion:

Steps to buy the best ceiling fan according to your requirement:

  1. First, determine the fan size according to the size of your room.
  2. Then check the fan air delivery(CMM) capacity, Choose the fan with a higher CMM value.
  3. Choose the star rating as per your budget. If you use a fan for more than 8 hours then choose the 5 stars-rated fans.
  4. Then choose the low-wattage fan for lower consumption.
  5. I suggest choosing the BLDC fan which is also 5 stars rated and very low wattage of rating.

My recommendation:

Atomberg Renesa 1200mm

  • Power rating 28 Watts
  • Voltage between 140-285V
  • Speeds upto 360 RPM
  • Air delivery 235 CMM
